Favorite Snacks

Summer time is coming and we always have kids around the property. They love anything to do with a horse. I am wondering what are your horses favorite snacks. I know apples and carrots, but are there other things your horse loves that is good for them?

I know some people that let their horses munch on cabbage and lettuce but I keep thinking one of those is bad for a horse, you know by chance which?

My horse likes grapes. Once we were out on a walk and I had my lunch. I set it on a bench and she went wild. Grapes are her favorite thing. I am not sure how good they are for her so I limit them.

Almost anything from the garden. Mine loves beets and turnips. The odd sugar cubes are good, not too often though. You can get special horse treats too.

I bet my horse would love beets. They have the high sugar content. I am going to have to go see today. I wonder if the staining qualities of beets will make a mess.

Never thought of some of those

My two love the basic apples and carrots. Both grow on the farm so Gram always had at least one of these in her pocket when she spent time with the horses. I have noticed one odd thing with one my horses. Cara sneaks in a mouthful of Bear's kibble whenever she gets the chance. The other horse, Tara, doesn't touch it. I've never heard of a horse eating dog kibble before but it doesn't seem to make her ill at all. She only grabs one bite each time she gets near his bowl.

hmmm, dog food does seem an odd choice for a horse.

My girl loves her some apples, and pears, and pretty much any other fruit she's ever managed to steal from me!

Dog food is just such a yucky thing for any animal, so I don't see why a horse would like it. They are too intelligent for that!
