Fake Experts

Have you ever overheard someone running their mouth off about horses and training or breeding or what not and hoped no one was believing all the garbage they were spewing? I was cleaning tack last weekend and listening to one of the new boarders babbling about how she was gonna breed her mare to such and such stallion because he was superb in the ring, had great color, etc. Don't get me wrong her mare is a sweet beastie (especially for putting up with her) but she's nothing you'd want seconds of.

I used to teach a boy like that. We had another barn over for summer camp so they had enough horses for everyone to ride using ours and theirs they trailered over. "John" was going on and on about how sweet and mellow Ki-Ki was and what a wonderful girl she was and how he was looking forward to starting to ride her soon to learn to canter.

When the girl he was talking to went to come mount Aquila she almost fell off laughing. Aquila was our 22yr old Thoroughbred gelding. When she got on his equipment was hanging out as he was dozing in the sun. Needless to say he hid in the hay loft for some time. He had assumed Aquila was a girl since I was riding him and every other horse I rode was a feisty mare.

Oh yes

It made me laugh when I read this thread's title, because I have heard several such discussions while visiting my cousin at her horse barn I am no expert myself, but I don't pretend to be - it is comical listening to folks who think they ARE, however, especially when even I - as a NON-expert - recognize that they don't know what they are saying!

I think that's pretty common everywhere, not just with horses. People seem to turn a blind eye to their animal's imperfections, or only focus on their animal's good point/points.

Sometimes when you are around people like that you just need to grin and go on your own way. The more you tend to tell them they are wrong the more flackk you are going to hear from them about something else.
