Equine Parenting

I have never considered this in the past-but how good are horses as parents? What sort of care do they take of their young, and what is involved? (I've only been involved with older horses).

Horses are herd creatures so they take good care of their young as do the others in the herd. A good mare will not only raise her foal to be healthy but teach them manners as well, just like a dog. I've known mares to actually potty train their foals. Granted the mare only pooped in one corner as well, but she used to berate her foal if he messed up her stall.

That was interesting! I guess I thought that horses just went willy nilly, never minding where it was. I knew they were herd animals and most herds take care of the young pretty good.

I've seen herds where the mother left the foal with a babysitter! She takes wonderful care of her foal, just as a human would. She makes sure he's fed and clean, that he learn how to survive in the wild and how to be a good mother herself when the filly is older. In fact, it's really neat to watch.
