Emotional issues
The horse we're getting has belonged to the same people and been with the same other horses her entire life. She does know us as we were frequent visitors to my in-laws home. And even if we didn't ride, my sons would go see the horses every visit.
I know horses are smart and they form bonds and attachments, so I'm wondering how much of an adjustment will it be when our horse is moved away from the familiar into an unknown stable, surrounded by strange horses and people. We do plan to visit very often, but just wondering what to expect with the move. |

I am not convinced that horses create bonds with humans. I have never seen a horse call out for a missing human. I have seen horses call out because someone is going to feed them.
Horses become part of a herd and every horse has a place in the herd. When you take a horse to a new place with other horses you need to give the horses time to work out that order. When I move a horse, I make sure the new horse is separated by a fence. The horses can then begin to figure out the herd order again without getting into fights. My experience with moving horses has been that the horse will call out to the old herd for awhile. At the new place they will be worried, until the find their place in the new herd. |
