Mounting Block or Not?

Do you use a mounting block to get on your horse/the horse you ride? I went riding at a friends the other day and she used a mounting block to get on a pony she was exercising even though it was plenty short for her to mount from the ground. I've always only used a mounting block or a leg up if the horse was to big. How do you get on?

I've never used a mounting block-they just don't make sense. I cannot always guarantee that the place I will mount my horse is the stable, and so there might not be anything available to help me mount. Might as well get used to mounting without a block.

I have never used one when I have been riding. Most places I ride for fairgrounds and so on just have you use a fence if needed, and being female there are men around willing to give a lady a lift.

Yes, there is always that! Though in truth I find that getting a 'lift up' from a guy is about the least ladylike thing there is. I would rather scramble and climb as best I could than try that.

Hi Aplslch,

I use a mounting block to. It helps me to get to ride the horse faster as I am rather short and I was not gifted with long legs. Gives me a good leg up though.

I did when I was younger, and for a time after having my children (when I didn't have the strength to hoist my flabby post-partum self up

). For the most part I just scramble up the horse as best I can, or use a fence, or low wall or anything that's available if I need it!

I have never used a mounting block because I am a tall dude. My wife, however, needs a mounting block because she is a small woman and has trouble going up but refuses my help lol

My wife has no problem having me help her get onto a horse. I make a step with my hands and she swings right up and on. Graceful quick and I don't think it is less than ladylike. Me I'm 6'5'' and using a mounting block would look silly.

Well I guess they serve a purpose but I for one, never found any need to get one. I generally just lift the kids on and my son , although short, figures it out by himself. He'd never be caught dead using a block anyway.

I am a bit embarrassed to admit I almost always use a mounting block. I'm not that short, but I'm not gifted with grace, and so using one prevents much more embarrassing situations from arising.

I've never used a mounting block before. Although, I would have loved to have one as a kid as that would have made getting on a lot easier.

I am a shortie so I would definitely need one, no sense in trying to run away from it. A fence or a wall would be just as good though.

For a woman 5'8" is not short but I find climbing on a horse without a little help a bit of a challenge. I don't have a husband to give me a leg up and I'd rather not get help from some of the guys I've met riding. If there is a mounting block available I use it.

I think a mounting block is useful for riders who are just learning or for kids who would naturally have some difficulty getting up. For most adults or more experienced iders, it's purely a matter of convenience. Us men...? I think not.
