Donkeys

I see some people here live in the country and have other animals on their land. Does anyone have a donkey? What are they good for and do they get along with other animals fairly well?

I have only seen them in carnivals and at the seaside. They seem to get on with just about anyone-have a very gentle nature and hence them being used around kids so much. They are also strong and good for pulling work on farms, I believe.

My father inlaw used to have one in the field with his goats. Basically, all he was good for was eating down grass, being a pet, and making alot of noise! He was such a calm fellow though and I hated to see him go when they sold him.

Are they affection animals? They always seemed pretty nice when you see them around the little ones.

What would make a person buy one if you weren't buying them to have kids ride?

The one my father inlaw had was a big ole baby. He would walk right to you to get a nice rub on his head or pat on his side. He loved kids and would stand and wiggle his ears when my kids would pet him. Aww, I wish I had bought that ole fella myself!

I know a person who lives not far from me who raises a small herd of donkeys just because he likes them. He sales one occasionally for to kids in the local 4-H club. I enjoy watching the mule and donkey competitions at our local state fair. Donkeys are highly intelligent and gentle animals which make them ideal for children. However, as an article I read put it, they have a high level of self-preservation. When a donkey becomes frightened or "decides something is not in his best interest", give up you're not gonna make him move. I've seen a lot of donkeys who have decided that being in that show ring is not in their best interest.

Yeah, I've seen them do that too! One year the circus came to my hometown and they had it in our high school gymnasium. Well, they had a donkey who seemed to be really calm and gentle. The first hour or so they were selling donkey rides for $5.00 each, then the poor fella got tired and it became donkey sits for $2.50! LOL I'll never forget that!

Some of the best competitions at in fair are animal competitions because you never know what animals are going to do next (just like kids) and donkeys and mules are the masters of show ring upsets.

Well the first time I rode on an animal it was a donkey. He knocked me right off his back! It was no fun. My grandpa though loved the animal and he said it was magical or something, I thought he was just crazy!

We used to have one at home when I was a child. We walked him like a dog in the forest and we kids could ride on him. That was always funny.
