Dogs and Horses

My sister is coming to visit us for a few months until her baby is born, and she's bringing her two Siberian Huskies. The dogs are very people friendly, but have dominance issues with other dogs (it's a breed thing). My saddlehorse is likewise very easy going around people.

Do dogs and horses get along? I don't want anyone to end up bitten, or with a horseshoe shaped dent in the head.

Most I have seen do get along quite well, but then again I have never seen a Husky near a horse. My uncle has a 1/2 collie 1/2 something else and he seems to do find around the farm animals.

It definitely can vary. My oldest dog thought horses were just big dogs and got confused when they made different sounds. I've been at plenty of barns with dogs though that ran about the place with no issue.

Slow introduction works best to see what they will do. Do not let them lose with a horse, but keep both on a leash as well as the horse on a lead and let them sniff each other. So long as the dogs are trained to do things such as "leave it" and not harass the horse everyone should be ok after a bit of settling in.

You'll just have to see what the dogs are like around the horse, and vice versa. Some dogs are great, others will chase them. Some horses will tolerate a dog around, others will get spooked and may try to kick the dog. It all depends on the dog.
