It's been several years since I've been around horses. Living in the city right now I don't currently have one of my own. I am going to be moving to the country in the next six months and would like to, finally, be able to purchase my first horse. What are some basic physical qualities I should look for? Are there some basic questions I should be sure to ask? This horse will be for pleasure riding and a companion animal. I haven't decided on a particular breed at this point; although, I am partial to the Appaloosa.

I think many people don't go about choosing the right horse for the job sometimes and forget to take into consideration some of the things you have mentioned. I see some people that will get a horse and not have enough land for it and that has to be a big pet peeve of mine, second only to neglecting the animal. I wish more people thought like you do!

You can google for any number of proper confirmation horse diagrams that will allow you to pick out a healthy specimen. Its mostly a matter of angles. However some flaws can be ok depending on usage and could get you the Appaloosa you covet at a better price.
