Cleaning Stalls-What Method
I was speaking to a friend the other day who was giving stable directions to her newest group of student workers and was outlining the four main ways of cleaning stalls at her stable:stripping, picking, throwing, and the quick pick.
Stripping involves replacing 100% of the bedding, picking requires going through all the bedding and removing the wet spots and all the poop by sifting with the rake, throwing requires removing the wet spots and throwing the remaining bedding against the wall to remove the poop that rolls out the pile, and a quick pick requires removing the wet spots and a pick where the largest poop piles are (not usable if the horse stirs or paces in its stall). Which got me thinking about all the ways people clean their stalls. How do you clean yours? |

We normally do something between what you call a pick and a quick pick. We have alot of horses (12 plus some foals) so picking would take all day and then we wouldn't get to ride and fun stuff, but a quick pick sometimes works against you and gets everything full of ground poop. Not as bad as the horses who pace and make everything dark brown with poop, but still not pleasant to think about your horse sleeping in.
