Chosing a boarder
How do you go about the process? Do you ask friends for referrals? Make visits/interviews? Or just pick someone close?
In the past I always went with friends' recommendations and my gut feelings. I'd go over and chat with the boarder, take a look at the stables (and the conditions of the other horses), and go with my gut. I've never had a problem. But a friend of mine recently had issues with her boarder, so I am just wondering what kinds of cautions you take? |

I'd go with my gut. I've never been one to listen too closely to word of mouth. Every place can have unsatisfied customers. Find a couple and watch from the sidelines a few times, just drive past and see how much time they get and what their day to day looks like. Visit them and talk with the boarder, make sure he knows his horses, that he isn't only in it for money. See how behaved the other horses are.But most of all, trust your gut.

Surprise visits, talking to boarders and the conditions of ALL the horses are what I've always gone on for picking a new barn. If the pony thats retired and lugs every child around at age 20 has a shiny coat and nice hooves its likely they all do.

I would first compose a list of questions to ask. You would not want to forget anything. Also I would ask clients at the stables what they think. Call around, do not be afraid to ask questions, don't feel pressured. Those are all the big points I can think of.
