I mean, I haven't seen a pound for large animals but there must be some sort of program for when animals get taken away from bad owners or when they are unwanted, right? I was just wondering if there is a place where they can be adopted?

There are very few that I am aware of that will allow this only for having such a hard time placing an animal and making 100% sure that person/people involved are able to support it.

Normally most shelters don't have the room for this, but several near me do. Others may place them only with a temporary foster home before adoption. There are also equine only rescues, many which specialize in race breeds, premarin horses, etc.

I'm in New England so I'll have to look around for a rescue organization. I don't want to adopt a horse but I would love to help support the group and perhaps volunteer.

Pegasus, you can go to www.equinerescue.com for information on equine adoption and rescue. They can hook you up with horses nationwide that need someone to care for them.

Premarin is the hormone replacement drug made from horse urine. Pregnant horse urine at least. They keep the horses in foal kind of like milk cows. There are less of them these days, but especially coming down from Canada you could easily find a couple. They sell foals, older horses and the mares as well. They are usually mixed breed, often draft mixes.
