Can horses sense natural disasters?

I've heard that animals can sense changes in weather that we can't. Like just before an earthquake, animals will get agitated and act crazy. I wonder if horses can sense things like a bad storm or an earthquake, before it happens. If so, is it instinct or some sort of sense?

Lots of theories

We had a dog when I was growing up that could always sense storms coming, especially electrical storms. My theory is that animals are more sensitive to changes in air pressure and humidity than humans are. Instinct is more highly developed in animals, too, for their survival. That's why you can predict how bad a winter will be by the thickness of beaver dams and how other animals prepare for the coming snow.

I am pretty sure this works for most all animals. I know my dog was able to sense a tornado about 4 hours before it got near our place and then started going batty over it all (took a great deal to calm her down).

I was in a barn with a bunch of horses a couple weeks ago. The horses all started getting very agitated and noisy. At first I thought it was some kind of social thing, but my friend told me it was the weather. Sure enough, a few minutes later we could hear thunder in the distance.

I think there is enough evidence to suggest that many animals have a higher awareness of their environment than humans do. Horses definitely have an acute sense of hearing and smell and I do believe that they can sense impending weather changes.

I think many animals including horses are able to sense things that humans may not be able to pick up on.

While it may just be a survival type instinct for them, it proves to be highly invaluable early detection for their human friends.

Horses are great at that stuff!

It's not hard to understand why they may be aware either. They are more attuned to some things, so perhaps it is a matter of it hurting their ears when the pressure changes. Or the smell-you know the rain smell, like ozone-maybe they are more sensitive to that.

I don't know why, I just believe it's true.
