Frage Black Leg

Last year when we were raising goats we lost four due to a disease called Black Leg. It is caused by a bacteria that is in the soil when they graze. That just makes me wonder if all livestock, including horses can get this disease to? Or, is it just something that is prevalent in goats?

I could be wrong but after looking around, all I found was that cattle, sheep and goats can get blackleg. There is a vaccine for this disease though.

Yes, and apparently it comes from certain plants. Rapeseed, potatoes, brassicas (like broccoli) and geraniums. I wonder how it works that a plant disease hurts the animals.

If its a bacterial disease it makes sense, although its a stretch. You figure the hooves are mostly fibrous tissue which is closer to plant fibrous growth than flesh. I wonder if the reason horses don't get it is based on the hoof structure?

Well, from what my friend who has raised goats for years told me, it is not something they get on their hooves but it's when they eat the bacteria when they are grazing. So, that would make one think it would be possible for any animal that grazes to get it. But who knows for sure...

Yes that would make sense. Bacterial infections can affect almost anything, but I have to wonder if this one actually makes the plants sick, or just the animals.
