Ausrufezeichen Best Breed for Racing?

Hi Everyone,

Since I am here because of my fiancee's influence. And he's thinking of buying a horse with a good breed he can have for racing. Can you guys recommend the best breed suited for racing and the like?

Answers will be greatly appreciated!

What type of racing? trotting races? flat races? steeplechasing? endurance racing? each type of race has a breed bred and suitable for it. Trotting races are full of standardbreds, flat races are full of thoroughbreds, steeplechasing has lots of thoroughbreds, endurance racing has lots of arabs, etc. There are other breeds as well such as Akhal-tekes and QHs (bred for the quarter mile).

I was referring to trotting races. Thanks for pointing the differences Pumpkinflirt. Now, I know what breeds are better off with what type of race. I am starting to learn a lot here. Thanks!

I've never seen anything but standardbreds in trotting races. They are big business where I am and we normally go to them once a year. Please train the horse to do more than trotting though, and to bend in both directions. We've reconditioned a couple for riding after they came from claim races or auction and they were stiff as boards and only bended well in the direction they were raced on the track. It made me a little sick that people only trained enough to race the horse since even a good race horse doesn't have a long career and most don't last that long and need to be able to go on to riding homes.
