Are shoes neessary?

Are there any times when shoes are not necessary? What if you ride the horse in just the pasture? Is there a time when a horse can go without?

Yes, a horse that is only ever ridden on earth, never on tarmac or concrete, can get away without shoes. I am sure that a horse that only rarely crosses somewhere paved would also be fine, as it would only wear a little.
