Anyone ride in parades?

I've been asked to join some other area riders in our town's 4th of July parade and then again for the Founder's Celebration later this summer. I've never ridden in a parade before and am wondering if there is anything I should be aware of for problems or whatever? I'm not worried about the people as my girls love people but I am concerned about the sirens and cannon firing that take place at the events.

Your horse(s) need to be pretty steady to ride a parade. Its like trail riding taken to the extreme. There's lots of noise, bright things, cars, moving things, and plenty of small kids darting everywhere. We used to buy the cheap poppers (the little paper twists with gunpowder in them) to acclimate horses to random loud noises. They are pretty safe and you can toss them anywhere like along a road.

I have never been in one myself but I am sure like kerrits stated your horse needs to be well adjusted to the loud noises that are going to be happening all around during the long walk. Does your horse have any training in this that you know of?

One has been in parades before

Apparently my gram used to ride one of the girls in the parades up until a couple of years ago so at least one is used to it. However, the two horses look so much alike, no one knows which horse she was riding or if she switched off on the two. I'm thinking that I could leave if the horse doesn't seem to be comfortable, though, so I may give it a try anyway.
