We had been debating introducing my daughter to horses through an American Miniature. However, given that they generally cannot be ridden I was debating fostering a rescue animal until it finds a home. This way we would not have a pet horse for a long time, and could move on to a pony that could be ridden.

Is this a little insensitive? What would you do?

I have to agree with you, if she gets used to it, she would want to ride it. The poor horse wouldn't be able to handle it. And if you rescue a pet, you could see how she feels with it, and maybe eventually ride it, all while doing good taking care of it.

It would eliminate the risk of your daughter not coping, or not liking horses or riding. This way, if they befriended each other you could progress to adoption or could take a step back and allow a life long owner to step in.

I think this would be a sensible option.
