Cutting

I have been training my horse for cutting. It has been fun training with the cows. My horse comes alive when it sees the cows and jumps to action. I have also started to learn to rope cows. I can't believe how hard it is to rope. It looks easy on TV.

It always looked easy on TV. I have heard that cutting is a tad hard to master if you don't have the patience. How long have you both been practicing for?

haha, I remember going to a western horse expo thing once where we got to try "roping" a plastic horn set. Wow it was hard to do everything you need to, plus aim. I have alot or respect for people who train and compete in cutting, let alone all the people who actually have to cut, rope, etc because they are real cowboys. Its got to be incredibly exhausting to do that. But some horses love it just like herding dogs like to herd animals. It looks like dancing sometimes when a good pair do it.

I have been practicing for years on cutting. It is fun because my horse really enjoys it. She gets excited when she sees the cows and you can feel the energy in her body. Once you tell what cow to cut, you put your hands on the horn and you're along for the ride. When you want to release your horse off the cow you lift your reins. Way cool.

Roping is very hard for me. It takes many, many hours of practice. I have roped live cows twice and I wasn't sure who had who.

We did this once but the sad part is that our horses will not mingle with the cows. It seems to me that they are very hostile at each other. So, what we do is we separate the cows from the horses to avoid any untoward incident.
