We normally let the person who the pet was acquired for name the pet. It could be based on their personality, coloring, birthday, etc depending on how it goes.
Example:
coppernicus was a green/blue beta (copper oxidizes that color)
dusty was a fuzzy grey cat my dad threatened to use as a duster
