Pumkinflirt is right. It depends on the kind of race.

If you're looking at big, official races like the Melbourne cup, then there are restrictions on the breeds that can enter.

You can race short distance, medium distance or long distance. Quarter horses are bred for very short distances, Thoroughbreds are bred for 1 or 2 mile races. Arabians and ponys are good at endurance racing.

It depends what you're looking for, although if you just want to race around the back paddock with friends.

Personally, I'd choose a standardbred, as they're not as flightly as thouroughbreds.
